South Africa Is Emerging as iGaming’s Most Exciting Growth Market

Strong demand, digital momentum, and untapped opportunity are positioning the country at the center of the industry’s next wave

The global iGaming industry thrives on innovation, adaptability, and local expertise, and South Africa is a standout market. At Sigma Cape Town Day Two, NookTalks sat down with Ruan, Head of Sales at Aardvark Technologies, to discuss the company’s journey, the evolution of the South African market, and what lies ahead for gaming across the continent.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Cape Town and Table Mountain, the conversation highlighted how regional specialists are becoming increasingly important in shaping the next chapter of iGaming growth. Aardvark Technologies has established itself as one of the leading platform providers in South Africa, with a footprint that spans both retail and online gaming operations. According to Ruan, the company has been operating for around a decade, initially building its reputation in the retail gaming space before expanding aggressively into online operations after the pandemic. “We started in the retail market, then expanded and grew into the online side after COVID in 2020,” he explained. That strategic pivot appears to have paid off. Today, Aardvark powers approximately 18 live websites in South Africa and maintains strong relationships with some of the country’ s biggest gaming brands.

While competition in the region remains fierce, Aardvark’s combination of local market understanding and scalable technology has allowed it to capture meaningful market share. South Africa continues to attract attention as one of the most dynamic regulated gaming markets on the African continent. It combines digital maturity, growing smartphone penetration, and an increasingly engaged player base. For platform providers, this creates a compelling opportunity. Aardvark’s presence in South Africa puts it at the center of a market where operators are looking for reliable, locally informed partners who understand compliance requirements, customer behavior, and evolving product preferences. The country is also increasingly serving as a gateway to broader African expansion. As operators evaluate opportunities beyond traditional European and North American markets, South Africa often becomes the first logical entry point in Africa due to its relative maturity and infrastructure.

Ruan’s own career mirrors the evolution of the wider gaming industry in South Africa. He shared that he has worked in gaming since the age of 18, having grown up around the industry through his father’s involvement in horse racing. That early exposure led to a professional career spanning multiple verticals. His journey began with Hollywood Bets, one of South Africa’s best- known operators, where he worked extensively in horse racing before transitioning into sports betting. He later gained experience with other major names, including Betting World and SuperBets, before joining Aardvark. That hands- on operational experience across racing, betting, and platform environments gives him a rare 360- degree view of the industry, something especially valuable in a leadership role focused on growth and partnerships.

One of the standout themes from the discussion was Aardvark’s operator- first model. The company doesn’t simply provide technology- it helps gaming brands launch, scale, and compete in a highly localized environment. That includes platform infrastructure, aggregation capabilities, and proprietary gaming content. Ruan noted that Aardvark has also recently launched its own crash game titled Sky Pilots, signaling the company’s ambitions beyond platform services alone. Crash games remain one of the most popular categories in emerging gaming markets, particularly among mobile- first users seeking rapid, high- engagement gameplay. By entering this vertical with an in- house product, Aardvark is broadening its value proposition and strengthening its ecosystem.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, Ruan was optimistic about both South Africa and the wider African market. “I assess the iGaming space is a very interesting space- always expanding,” he said. “South Africa is a growing market.” That growth story extends beyond one country. Africa is widely viewed as one of the next major frontiers for digital gaming thanks to an emerging and increasingly connected population, rising smartphone adoption, expanding mobile payment infrastructure, demand for localized entertainment products and untapped operator opportunities in multiple jurisdictions. However, regulatory consistency remains a major variable.

As Ruan pointed out, the legal environment in many African markets can shift rapidly, creating both opportunities and operational complexity for operators and suppliers. This is where experienced regional partners evolve essential. Companies with deep market understanding, local teams, and flexible technology stacks are likely to outperform those attempting a one- size- fits- all expansion strategy.

Events like Sigma Cape Town are becoming increasingly influential as Africa gains more attention from global operators, affiliates, investors, and suppliers. For companies like Aardvark, these gatherings provide a valuable platform to showcase technology, deepen partnerships, and demonstrate regional leadership. Ruan described the event as insightful and highlighted the company’s strong presence on the show floor.

That visibility matters. As more global stakeholders explore African growth strategies, the suppliers already embedded in these markets stand to gain first- mover advantage.

The conversation with Ruan underscored an important reality: while many global gaming companies are only beginning to examine Africa’ s potential, local leaders like Aardvark Technologies have already spent years building infrastructure, relationships, and market expertise.

With 18 live brands, a growing product portfolio, and strong roots in South Africa, Aardvark is well positioned for the next phase of continental expansion. As regulation matures and player demand accelerates, Africa’s iGaming future will likely be shaped not only by international giants but by agile regional champions who understand the market from the ground up.
